Can HCL put Humpty Dumpty back together again

Back in 1989 Lotus Notes was released and for many years it occupied a unique position in the software market. One of my favorite quotes from this era is found in the video below (at the 55 second mark) when a report asks “Lotus Notes, what the hell is it?”. The response (I assume from a business partner) is “… I couldn’t tell you. I have no idea. I just sell it!”

Lotus Lives

By any measure last Friday was a very notable day in the History of Notes/Domino. Not only was it the 29th anniversary of the first release of Notes but we heard the news that HCL had acquired (or is acquiring) the full rights to Notes/Domino along with a number of products in the IBM portfolio. Perhaps the most notable of these being Connections.

A new PLACE for my Lotus – Application Design and Modernization for IBM Notes and Domino

Simply put Places is designed to be a fresh interpretation of the collaboration space, one that specifically includes no-code and low-code development. So far we really only have two constraints on our work.

How Domino Became Engaged – Application Design and Modernization for IBM Notes and Domino

Engage 2018 was an awesome event for a great many reasons. Seeing this event grow from humble beginning to an event that is now attracting 400 attendees from a wide range of countries is a huge testimony to the dedication of lifetime IBM Champion Theo Hesslemans. The most telling statistic for me was that 40% of attendees were attending Engage for the very first time.

Time to reTHINK – Application Design and Modernization for IBM Notes and Domino

Last Week’s IBM Think conference was very different to recent Lotusphere and Connect conferences for a wide range of reasons. In fact for me, having attended my first Lotusphere back in 2010 (Project Vulcan), this was my first major IBM event in which the star (within the ICS portfolio) was a product named Domino! The message would have been more impactful if the ICS presence had not been such a small part of the Think event itself. For me the major take-away from the event was that Domino was back and we need to start rethinking what that means!

Lessons Learned Replacing Lotus: Part 2025

By Red Pill Now | 11/28/17 10:33 AM | - | Added by Oliver Busse

As a long-time Lotus enthusiast I was very interested. My interest in driving a Lotus had waned a bit over recent years as I focused more on the pleasures of spending time with my family than the pleasure of driving my yellow sports car. Now seemed like a good time for me to renew that enthusiasm.

What We Learned at MWLUG 2017

Richard Moy and team put together another great User Group event in Alexandria, VA last week. Its an event that falls half-way between the annual event once known as LotusSphere. This year’s event set a new attendance record, including a large contingent of IBMers allowing all to get the latest information and news for all things Collaboration (ICS). The following are the key take aways that I noticed as a former Notes developer still passionate about finding future paths for Notes data.

Our Views On Connect 2017

Last week Devin Olson and myself had the chance to attend IBM Connect 2017 in San Francisco. It was a new venue in a new location combining some of the traditions of the past along with a few things new and different. I had the chance to hear IBM’s message, discuss the events with a number of the people who attended as well as share ideas internally with the team at Red Pill Now. The following is a summary of my thoughts from this year’s event.

Engage: A New Direction?

In 2010 I attended my first Lotusphere – Lotus Knows How, Lotus Knows Why. That event still holds a special spot in my memory because it was the last time Lotus Notes (and Application Development) would have any true presence as part of the IBM messaging at Lotusphere aka Connect aka ConnecEd aka Connect.

IBM Verse: Next Impressions

By Red Pill Now | 2/3/16 4:45 PM | - | Added by Oliver Busse

While IBM didn’t say it, I couldn’t help but think that IBM Verse is in the process of being totally integrated into Connections, to the point in which I am not sure if it would make any sense to try and identify (or use) it as a separate product. It would be hard to have Connections without Verse,

IBM Verse: Final Impressions

Back in May of last year I shared my first impressions in using IBM’s new e-mail client Verse. After using Verse for seven months the trial in which I had been participating came to an end. It was an interesting time as my experience with Verse caused me to look very closely at the various email clients I have been using and challenge what really matters to me in my choice of an email client.
